Workshop in Yakutia on Northern Sea Route space monitoring problems
On November 28-29, a meeting of the “Non-Commercial Partnership on Northern Sea Route Usage Coordination” Council and the Council of science and technical policy under the Yakutian President was held in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). State Duma Deputy Chairman, President of the Association of Polar Explorers Arthur Chilingarov, Republic of Sakha executives, Non-Commercial Partnership members from Finland, Sweden and Russia (St-Petersburg, Moscow, Naryan-Mar, Yakutsk), representatives of major companies and regional organizations took part in the meeting. Yakutian President Vyacheslav Shtyrov opened the meeting.
Different issues of Yakutian transportation and Northern Sea Route infrastructure development were discussed at the meeting. Head of the high latitude arctic expedition Vladimir Sokolov reported on Northern Seas Route navigation using on-line ice situation data. General Director of ScanEx R&D Center Vladimir Gershenzon introduced to the audience the current on-line satellite-based ice condition monitoring technology available now in Russia.
In compliance with the meeting program, an opening ceremony for International Laboratory of Atmospheric Monitoring took place in the town of Tixi. At the end of the Partnership meeting decisions and proposals on the Northern Seas Route development were documented and submitted to appropriate federal ministries and departments.
According to the Yakutsk-Sakha information agency, the Non-Commercial Partnership on Northern Sea Route Usage Coordination was established on July 28, 2001 (President – Arthur Chilingarov) with a goal to improve the Northern Sea Route navigation, to support commercial maritime traffic and to work out proposals in support of ships navigation safety and environmental protection in the Arctic region.
